So, here's my explanation. As much as I hate to and as embarrassed as I am to say this...I'm leaving MFW.<br /><br />God has called me to <a href="http://www.sowcurriculum.com/">The SOW Curriculum</a>.<br /><br />As is my custom, I've created <a href="http://studentsoftheword.blogspot.com/">a blog</a> to keep in touch.<br /><br />I've met some very nice people along the way using MFW and plan to continue directing others there as well. It's just not where God wants us. If you've read my blog before, I've always spoke highly of SOW, but wasn't convinced that's where I needed to be. I am now. God kept calling me and I needed to obey.<br /><br />God bless!<br />~MercyMercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-26501584018251851312008-05-29T12:47:00.000-07:002008-05-29T13:03:07.593-07:00Boy...am I lagging here. :-)So, we're on week 12. We just started our state study. I ordered Pickles her own state sheets with the stickers, because she's really gotten involved with school lately. <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Every time</span> we do any <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">notebooking</span> she takes hers out and asks where her paper is to do. It's easy enough for her to color and put a sticker on. They are on the way!<br /><br />I think next week we are going to take an entire week to play catch-up on some of the projects we haven't been able to do and do some book basket reading. We've just sort of <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">skimmed</span> over a lot of them. Either we haven't had the materials (simple things like vinegar and sugar are missing from my cupboards right now!) So, we'll spend some time next week doing some of the fun stuff!<br /><br />I've been really enjoying letting the kids play the afternoon away. I found the original <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Charlotte</span> Mason books on sale, so I've been reading through them. I've got lots to say on the subject, so I'll save that for another post. But, in the meantime, she convinced me of the benefits of making sure children get plenty of play time outdoors. So, we've made it a priority to get outside in the sunshine (or rain...one day it actually was hailing and we had to run inside - that was fun!)<br /><br />Anyway, we're still alive. (Even the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Caterpillar</span>!!- still no <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">cocoon</span> yet though...)<br /><br />Life is <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">grand</span>! :-)Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-66684985952922993622008-05-19T13:23:00.000-07:002008-05-19T13:34:12.609-07:00Look what we found!!!What's in that jar?<br /><div></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNcYZ2xY95mvMP9v2jItYUm1eq0Og8tV9G2u8rjVxRPWXKRj1oy8adrdgGC2cFSYrwWp3VJ2wVnjYTjiPwZy5O1AvdoS_jvDHfw-SfkETougYiFonbmF50S9mLie95KW5ld-9ZMsMfZQU/s1600-h/100_4917.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202188664389034930" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNcYZ2xY95mvMP9v2jItYUm1eq0Og8tV9G2u8rjVxRPWXKRj1oy8adrdgGC2cFSYrwWp3VJ2wVnjYTjiPwZy5O1AvdoS_jvDHfw-SfkETougYiFonbmF50S9mLie95KW5ld-9ZMsMfZQU/s400/100_4917.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><div></div><div> </div><div>We were just sitting outside working on our school this morning. All about the pilgrims and how they came here. Also about when Christopher Columbus came and found North America. I also learned about Pocahontas and how she saved Captain John Smith. I learned how to make butter and how yeast represents sin. <span style="font-size:85%;">(in the old test.)</span> </em></div><div><em></em> </div><div><em>The big dipper is part of another constellation called the "big bear."</em></div><div><em></em> </div><div><em>This week we are studying about Benjamin Franklin. He was the one who found out that electricity can travel, so he's really important.</em></div><div> </div><div><strong>~Mom here~</strong></div><div>Below is a picture of some of the projects we've done. <em>( I just took it)</em> The viking ship is the project that we had outside of MFW and I was really excited to share. But, as it turns out both Superkid & Superman worked on this for over FOUR hours and, as you can see, it's still not finished. However, they both had a great time. :-)</div><div> </div><div>A little on the canoes in the picture - Superkid finished his and put his hand in it pretending to have people inside, which reminded me of the "Ten Little Indians" song. After I sung it, Pickles drew her hand on her canoe - I thought that was cute. By the way, they both did their very own sewing all by themselves. Great job, eh?</div><br /><div></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhICJQlul4eu1f1Gns2zkdX2SVJXyta1aDXId4KmyLWiL61_IzD-SG6Nsoz6_LXq2C5zeuesnBAhcebYgnnti19eLqijPKRyoqFMcZmq1e-bI-9bd6Q7PPLbn7HIaT_itwg0_yJtj8E2Uc/s1600-h/100_4893.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5200368624752714658" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhICJQlul4eu1f1Gns2zkdX2SVJXyta1aDXId4KmyLWiL61_IzD-SG6Nsoz6_LXq2C5zeuesnBAhcebYgnnti19eLqijPKRyoqFMcZmq1e-bI-9bd6Q7PPLbn7HIaT_itwg0_yJtj8E2Uc/s400/100_4893.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div></div>Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-22146147895480343752008-05-14T12:36:00.000-07:002008-05-14T12:46:55.954-07:00Week 8Sorry I haven't been around. You know how it is...<br /><br />So, we had some breaks since dh was home for awhile. And some other things.<br /><br />In the meantime we have been slowly working though and we are now on week 8.<br /><br />Everyone is talking now about summer time and school being done. We'll just take it by the day - making sure to go swimming, hang out at the park, etc. I honestly LOVE schooling outside in the summer time. Too much free time makes us all go bonkers anyway. My long term plan is to be done with ADV by Jan - which I think is easily doable. I'm secretly hoping to be done before the holidays...we'll see.<br /><br />No pictures today, they are on a missing sd card.<br /><br />I'll post some when I find it.<br />Keep checking back...we're still here, just a little sidetracked. :-)Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-69590435486030419832008-04-15T15:21:00.001-07:002008-04-15T15:45:57.482-07:00Let's see...This is week 5 - I think.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXPvN7pNOFUIXbnT_wSwE3bLIbWolr0HABKU32PAAA5nQJpzj6mPUvbC4INoCNDU0xsAmNxracpLvFWyaD3-KKoDc7srXeVAhdP6bRvgKKxAQuh_2wF6GyMUzPgllJii8iNbwkClRu7Eo/s1600-h/100_4442.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5189602347191202706" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXPvN7pNOFUIXbnT_wSwE3bLIbWolr0HABKU32PAAA5nQJpzj6mPUvbC4INoCNDU0xsAmNxracpLvFWyaD3-KKoDc7srXeVAhdP6bRvgKKxAQuh_2wF6GyMUzPgllJii8iNbwkClRu7Eo/s400/100_4442.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Hasn't he improved within a short amount of time? He decided what to write and wrote it all on his own. Do you see that picture?? He's really doing good. :-)<br /><br />I didn't take pictures of the project we did with the window paper, but it was fun. Daddy happened to come home while we were working on this one and he added a bit of learning too. I didn't read too well and used newspaper instead, but it worked. On the sides you could see through the paper enough to read something behind it.<br /><br />Anyway, I keep doing that (skimming too quickly over the tm)...we've started TWICE books that we weren't supposed to read yet. I usually have gotten a couple days into it when I realize we were supposed to be reading squanto, not the indian book. Or, Sarah Wicher not Sarah Nobel. OOohh well...I'll blame it on my "baby fog."<br /><br />Otherwise, we're doing fine. We may seem like we're behind, but according to my schedule I planned before we started - we're right on time. Amazing!<br /><br />And more importantly, we're learning and having FUN!!!!!!<br /><br />(P.S. I'm doing away with the labels, you can just check the archives to see whats been happening.)Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-23598351256469888582008-04-15T14:30:00.000-07:002008-04-15T15:06:54.434-07:00Spelling Switch-a-rooI can't believe I haven't mentioned the fact that we switched our spelling!<br /><br />Although I love the idea of Sequential Spelling, it just wasn't working well. Many of the words he had never seen let alone heard before. He was getting a little discouraged, even with <a href="http://ourhomeschoolingadventures.blogspot.com/2008/02/first-week-done.html">"the motto."</a> So, I sucked it up and bought the expensive (but highly recommended) Spelling Power.<br /><br />I guess it is not THAT expensive considering you wear it out through high school with all of your children. So, when you take that into consideration, it's actually VERY economical. It's just a big upfront cost.<br /><br />So, how do we like it you ask? :-)<br /><br />I LOVE IT!!!<br /><br />The author really took time to learn how to study spelling. As everyone mentions it is quite an instruction manual! My head was spinning after reading it all afternoon. But, it's really quite simple.<br /><br />Here's how it works:<br />To begin you test to find out where your child should be placed. (one time only testing, but there are three different testing methods.)<br /><br />After you know where to begin, each day you will do the following:<br /><br />STEP 1:<br />~Find the group where you are at. Discuss the "spelling rule." Each list is grouped by sound, so they learn how the sounds are spelled.<br /><br />~Then, test them on that group. You will only test until either 5 minutes are up or your child misses a specific amount of words. (usually it's 3 for us.)<br /><br /><em>---Your time is done, the rest is done independently by the student.---</em><br /><br />STEP 2:<br />~Study the words missed using the "10 step study list." This is basically looking at the word to find out why you missed what you had missed, and trying to spell it a number of different ways.<br /><br />STEP 3:<br />~Do an activity to practice spelling the words missed. These can be anything from typing them up, writing them in whipping cream, or writing them in a sentence. I've been having Superkid do a jumping jack for each letter of his spelling word. It's the act of doing something to help them remember how to spell their word correctly.<br /><br />That's it. Then, when you do the test next you begin with the words missed to see if he/she learned them. It's really a neat concept!<br /><br />So far it's really working well for us. Superkid seems to enjoy the activities and has been honest within himself when he is really struggling with a word, even when he's gotten it right - he's studied it to be more confident on that word. That's really neat to see.<br /><br />I think it is worth the cost. Really. It not only is set up wonderfully, but it has taught me a lot about the why's and how's of spelling. Yep, it's a keeper around here.<br /><br />Superkid tested in way higher then I though he would. And, as I test him (I decided since we're at the beginning age, we'd just start in A and make it a little easier for awhile.) He REALLY is a great speller!!! He's been tricking me this whole time acting like he doesn't know. I have been doing the "review tests" through level A and he's cruising through them. Pretty amazing!<br /><br />Have I mentioned how much I LOVE homeschooling?<br />What else is better then watching your children grow and learn??Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-21543185672949499452008-04-08T21:05:00.000-07:002008-04-08T21:21:58.096-07:00Experiment TimeWeek 3 experiments!<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsvY_STntNfDCk6mrHpI9YgOI5WqKgXJuckZ1S4LAOf2rdcBl5BEFVC9iCMnalflF8neBFt6zP0iFkYsPvxakps4svfSSMVH52IRyTMfFXle8DveveKvEqGH3Mbwbw4HEv1S_mvN5Vrp4/s1600-h/100_4417.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5187092788772137906" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsvY_STntNfDCk6mrHpI9YgOI5WqKgXJuckZ1S4LAOf2rdcBl5BEFVC9iCMnalflF8neBFt6zP0iFkYsPvxakps4svfSSMVH52IRyTMfFXle8DveveKvEqGH3Mbwbw4HEv1S_mvN5Vrp4/s400/100_4417.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Yay!! We've been having a great time as the weeks have flown past. We're all over the charts! In History & Read aloud, we're in Week 5. We're taking a break from that to catch up a little in some of the other areas. (We were just really enjoying those!!) I think we've almost exhausted the book basket books we have here on the subjects. We're also moving very quickly in math, which is good since this stuff is "easy, schmesy stuff" for him. :-) As for Bible and even science (since they seem to go together, I've been trying to keep them together) we're a bit behind. Hubs still is determined to do it and since this "year" we're taking it a little easier, I think it will all work out just fine.<br /><br />I've said all of this to say...<br /><br />We are really struggling in the project area! This just seems to be a season that calls for more "reading and writing" than projects. Yes, they are easy and very doable. Why I can't seem to get to them...not sure. But, we're learning all the same. Hopefully we can slip a few in here and there, but I have a feeling we won't be doing a whole lot of projects for a little while. No guilt, right? :-)<br /><br />We are doing "Adventures" this year for a stress-free, relaxed year. That's the goal. And to learn a little in the process. So far, I think things are going as planned.<br /><br />Speaking of enjoyment...the weather has been warming up and we've had some time to get out in the fresh air and play. It feels SO good! We've started doing some nature study since we found <a href="http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/HarmonyArtMom/480223/">this blog</a>. She posts weekly assignments. Since we're taking it a little slower, I'm not sure that I'll blog about it. We'll see. We just started, but I doubt we'll be doing it weekly right now.<br /><br />And, speaking of Blogging...<br />It's looking like the way that we are heading through this curriculum is a little different. I think I might have trouble keeping up on a weekly basis, as opposed to maybe weekly check-ins or something.<br /><br />And, since we're not doing as many projects, there is not as many fun things to post (with pictures, etc.) So, I'll have to think about how to reorganize the blog to make it so it's not too boring. :-)<br /><br />Ok, I'm off to cuddle with my littlest and do a spelling test.<br />I'll brainstorm how to reorganize the blog in the meantime.<br /><br />Catch up with you later...Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-91399824681358814072008-03-10T12:40:00.000-07:002008-03-10T13:09:20.671-07:00We've "checked out" for a little.Well, Superkid spent just about all weekend in bed. Poor guy hasn't been feeling so good. He hasn't finished the projects I was going to post pictures of yet, so...no pictures until they are done.<br /><br />Today we all have been resting, hoping not to catch this bug. I'm thinking of doing a good spray down cleaning of the house, washing the bed sheets and taking the kids to the river to run around and get some fresh air.<br /><br />As far as school goes, I'm almost thinking of just taking this week off. Today just isn't happening, tomorrow we have an appointment and Friday is our homeschool meeting. And of course we're busy Wed & Thurs evening. I'm thinking though, depending on how we feel the rest of the week, we'll probably do <em>some</em> schoolwork and divide this week into two weeks.<br /><br />So, that's where we're at.<br />((cough, cough...sneeze, sniff, cough))<br /><br />See you later.Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-57541300549137559282008-03-07T13:30:00.000-08:002008-03-07T13:32:42.567-08:00Life got super busy...I just wanted to jump on to say, this week somehow became a VERY busy week. Almost every day we had things going on (outside of school). But, PRAISE GOD almost all of school got done even in the midst of all the chaos!!! I'll update as soon as I can and hopefully the next post I'll have some fun pictures. ;-)<br /><br />See you after awhile...Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-23636478119770137392008-03-04T12:21:00.001-08:002008-03-04T16:09:14.391-08:00Monday & Tuesday "Check In"Yesterday was our monthly visit to my parents to hang out with the "fish guy." Even still, we managed to get everything done except History. Originally I had thought we would make monday our "day off" for the week, but it turned out better to just keep going. So, we worked hard yesterday instead. :-)<br /><br /><br /><br />I'm finding it frustrating (as I thought I might) that our library is so slow in inter-library loans. They take a few weeks usually, which was fine for ECC, but since we are changing the subject each week, it's just not working out. So, I'm thinking probably on Friday we'll use our "day off" to go to the library and read this weeks books, then check some out for the next few weeks.<br /><br /><br /><br />Yesterday Superkid began his art. He is REALLY enjoying it! In fact, it didn't take much to talk him into getting caught up from last week. We don't have the good art supplies yet so in the meantime, he's just using what we've got. I think it will be fun for him to get pens and pencils that "real" artists use, so we'll do that as soon as we can.<br /><br /><br /><br />Today went by fast, which is always good. Spelling has upped the words to 20. It will go to 25 here soon, but stops there thankfully. Spelling seems to take the longest out of all of our "every day subjects." Math was super quick today, handwriting (we're working on cursive) and english (we're focusing on memorizing a poem) usually don't take long.<br /><br /><br /><br />I told Superkid we should challenge ourselves to see how quick we can actually accomplish school. Poor kid has had plenty of times he's spent the entire day in school. That's just wrong! So, I'm more than happy to let him get on with his day after he works diligently in school.<br /><br /><br /><br />We're skipping science today so that he can do some catch-up. He was not happy with his coloring job for his timelines last week so he's working to redo those. Plus, for some reason I didn't realize he was supposed to do a "narration" for Leif Ericsson, so he's working on that this afternoon. We'll do both sciences on Thursday together.<br /><br />Check back later, I should have some pictures up here after awhile.Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-67389999915856322992008-02-29T13:07:00.000-08:002008-02-29T13:38:26.526-08:00First week DONE!<div>This has been a lot of fun! Not too difficult to adjust to doing school - even with a newborn. :-) We had a break yesterday to visit with our family from out of town. Today we just picked up and did what we planned to do yesterday. Thankfully I have only a 4 day week planned this year, so that I can have a day to catch-up or let life take over.<br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div>Superkid is still working on that project I was talking about. I think his daddy is going to have to help with that one, since it's not my style thing. It will probably be done this weekend - I'll post a picture when it's complete.</div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div>Today went well. I love that this curriculum doesn't take long to finish each day - yet you accomplish so much within that small amount of time. It's so cool not to drag out the day doing school work, but knowing that we actually learned that day! </div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div>He's really having a hard time with spelling. Poor kid beats himself up whenever he gets any wrong. So, I made him cut out the "motto" for spelling and put it in his notebook. What is the motto you ask? I got it from the spelling curriculum itself: <em>"Mistakes are opportunities to learn."</em> I also make him say it whenever I find that he is discouraged. Hopefully he lightens up a little. Thankfully there is only just a few words per day and there are always a few very easy ones for him, to give him a little boost. </div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div>Still need to make copies, so we'll be behind a little in art. Looking at the first few lessons, I think we should be able to catch up easily.</div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div>Math is going well. I didn't realize he needed to practice counting backwards. I can see that this will really help him when he practices that a little more.</div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div>Ok. Enough of the boring stuff...</div><br /><br /><div>We did a fun experiment today!!</div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div>Our question was:</div><br /><br /><div><em>If you put an egg in salty water would it float better than in regular water?</em></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div>So...we got out two cups, filled each with water.<br />Added salt to one.</div><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKN8VTdPYyCQPJridZdFJETifXLF2butJiJo4lXnzBHvb_IsgVOf0O6aXv5GUMlCOlvX0TcSrSJJo0S1cFDSOH2xz-sBpwW1wjC5ET4_GNF0Pbmh_0ci5C6LKOffMpQXRaPWiB9lEjlL8/s1600-h/100_4062.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5172516762519820770" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKN8VTdPYyCQPJridZdFJETifXLF2butJiJo4lXnzBHvb_IsgVOf0O6aXv5GUMlCOlvX0TcSrSJJo0S1cFDSOH2xz-sBpwW1wjC5ET4_GNF0Pbmh_0ci5C6LKOffMpQXRaPWiB9lEjlL8/s400/100_4062.JPG" border="0" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6MfGcEIghr_lFwf-z24ikeRgmxJ2PoL4DaPrtyxC_1904AY-qgmQJfNqMWerTAEFEf3-eGnqs9ZLCo37aiYMEuxPPKEa5AJ-qXiEVZs5wVlI1YohxdlDLPDJ-t-IzR3VSi-ZvttcJhgY/s1600-h/100_4063.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5172516771109755378" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6MfGcEIghr_lFwf-z24ikeRgmxJ2PoL4DaPrtyxC_1904AY-qgmQJfNqMWerTAEFEf3-eGnqs9ZLCo37aiYMEuxPPKEa5AJ-qXiEVZs5wVlI1YohxdlDLPDJ-t-IzR3VSi-ZvttcJhgY/s400/100_4063.JPG" border="0" /></a></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Then added the eggs.</div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1Er0VjUdaUWFJjIlTRktrboY27o9evrcyrWqBmuQioJD9TMhvP8NGOuRV447Gwv2z6yQ86WD1lumjlnh9Ky9zUhZy-pB4S5KgHqNb06xgHjrXYZt4us4l_X8CLCEgEu0y2S5gApey8Qo/s1600-h/100_4066.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5172516775404722690" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1Er0VjUdaUWFJjIlTRktrboY27o9evrcyrWqBmuQioJD9TMhvP8NGOuRV447Gwv2z6yQ86WD1lumjlnh9Ky9zUhZy-pB4S5KgHqNb06xgHjrXYZt4us4l_X8CLCEgEu0y2S5gApey8Qo/s400/100_4066.JPG" border="0" /></a></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div>See, only the salty water with the egg floats!</div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL8L72zqD880x8CbcoHwTJXzyNkqz7L-H3Lc1xoJbwzMq71AuVMsksGxIlWDUalKx_MPl3KjE6fxfx8N89FeTO4hOAS3s4Br-4RN-SgYH_H6ZaBRks2Bcf4L_CXxBfG0XnvLnTAKs0p2U/s1600-h/100_4069.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5172516783994657298" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL8L72zqD880x8CbcoHwTJXzyNkqz7L-H3Lc1xoJbwzMq71AuVMsksGxIlWDUalKx_MPl3KjE6fxfx8N89FeTO4hOAS3s4Br-4RN-SgYH_H6ZaBRks2Bcf4L_CXxBfG0XnvLnTAKs0p2U/s400/100_4069.JPG" border="0" /></a></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div>It was hard to get a side picture because the salty water cup looked really cloudy. But, you can see that the egg floated to the top since there was salt in the water. Superkid really liked doing this. So much so, he decided to go beyond and asked if he could add salt to the other one just to see if it would float up right away. We found that we needed to make sure that the salt was really mixed in before it would actually float. He put the lid on and shook it a little, then it finally rose up. Now we're off to eat some hard boiled eggs! This was a two hour documentary on Vikings with about a 5 minute blurb about Leif Ericson. Oh well. It was interesting. And, I found this great site: <a href="http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/vikings/">http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/vikings/</a> with lots of fun things to do.<br /><br />Today went super again. One thing I am finding is that this year is turning out to be much more "independent" than I had expected. What I think is going to work is meeting with Superkid in the morning, giving him his math and art lessons then allowing him to work on his own. Sometimes that works for his english as well. Spelling just takes a few very short minutes of my time. Daddy is doing Bible. So really the big things I need to be available for is history and science. It all seems to work out really well.<br /><br />When pickles saw that we were doing a United States worksheet, she wanted to get right in on the lesson. In fact, she did a really good job - coloring our state, the US and the oceans. She especially enjoys having her very own school notebook. By the way grandma - She LOVES the puzzle! It has been played with it every day since you gave it to her. I tried it today for the first time - it's hard! And she's really very good at putting it together. She's a smarty pants. :-)<br /><br />So far school is going good. Tomorrow is a little busy. I added a fun project that might take a little longer than one day. I can't wait to see it done and show it here. I think it's going to be cool.<br /><br />I'll check in later.<br />Probably not tomorrow, but I'll be back soon.Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-4847474077229618192008-02-26T09:49:00.000-08:002008-02-26T09:54:12.650-08:00Red, White and BlueSo, what's the first thing YOU think of when the thought "red, white and blue snack" appears?<br /><br />How about...<br />QUASADILLAS?<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGUEsq9vGKgddoZClG2uIfeJthDHv3t-KW5G3fO6mP9AeAOhd2yMLvf3xdDdGyRcIKCx-CKf3ubCHDaCq5tOUaXiYWG_mlS1ONcORSIvoPkPwxDNlFL3JMGq_r-_RtT6L7Vl2f6jyjk9E/s1600-h/100_3986.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5171348021876310114" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGUEsq9vGKgddoZClG2uIfeJthDHv3t-KW5G3fO6mP9AeAOhd2yMLvf3xdDdGyRcIKCx-CKf3ubCHDaCq5tOUaXiYWG_mlS1ONcORSIvoPkPwxDNlFL3JMGq_r-_RtT6L7Vl2f6jyjk9E/s400/100_3986.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Uh Huh.<br />Hey, it works.Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-74508685653203680222008-02-25T15:50:00.000-08:002008-02-25T17:49:16.611-08:00First Day of SchoolYes, I know I'm crazy.<br /><br />In the middle of the excitement of adding a new member to our family, I've decided to just keep trucking on ahead. We started our first day of school today.<br /><br />Don't be alarmed. We stopped PLENTY to cuddle, talk to, take picture of and just admire our new little guy. But, I have to say it felt good to keep some sort of order in the midst of all the newness.<br /><br />God has been giving me a very quick recovery and I promise I am taking care to get rest. I just know there are a few concerned readers out there. Alright, now that that minds are at ease...<br /><br />We had a very nice day today!<br /><br />Started the day out with The Pledge of <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Allegiance</span>, which we plan to do each morning. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Superkid</span> LOVES anything to do with <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">America</span> and the flag, so he's really enjoying this. From there I introduced his new math, which I explained is super easy right now, but there are certain concepts I want him to understand before moving on. He took it better than I expected. In fact he worked on his skip counting skills, just to "challenge himself" he said. Afterword we started on spelling. He did stress a little on the sentence he was <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">supposed</span> to try, but I assured him that he just needed to try his hardest. He liked that it was so quick and easy. After contemplating for awhile, I have decided to go ahead and copy the first 26 lessons in his art book. We are going to have to wait to start art for a little while. So, we just skipped that and went on to learn a little more about the meaning of The Pledge of Allegiance and began our timeline. I printed out pictures of each of the kids to put into our notebook. Don't know if I've mentioned it or not, but we already had a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Wonders-Old-Blank-Timeline-History/dp/1932786104">Wonders Of Old Timeline</a> so I plan to just use that for the year. It was fun to put Baby Boy's new picture in there. :-) The last thing we did was our "character study" that I had added - The Ethics book. Since it is written in the late 1800's the vocabulary is much larger than we are used to, so we had a dictionary handy. Even still, I think it went well. It gave us some things to chew on. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Superkid</span> mentioned it later on, so <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">even though</span> it seemed a little bit above him, he heard something that kept his mind turning.<br /><br />Don't think I mentioned this, but Daddy has decided he wants to try to do the bible with the kids each day. He's planning to begin tonight. He's also bringing home our Red, White and Blue snack. We might have to cuddle up and watch our viking movie we checked out from the library tonight too, just to end the day right. ;-)<br /><br />Altogether today was very enjoyable.<br />I'll keep you updated as we go along.Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-80787553266393714872008-02-25T15:45:00.000-08:002008-02-25T15:49:36.838-08:00He's Here, He's Here!!!!At last, I can introduce my little man!<br /><br />"Big D" as he's been called around here.<br /><br />weighed 7lbs 6oz, 19 inches long<br />And...ahem...4 1/2 inch biceps. LOL.<br />Born: February 21st, 2008 @ 7:16am<br /><br />Everything went amazingly well.<br /><br />Praise God for this little blessing he gave me!Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-21869044729758903042008-02-18T09:19:00.000-08:002008-02-18T09:29:09.169-08:00Can we really start March 3rd?I had planned for baby to be here by now. Which was going to give me bonding time and time to be a little bonkers before we set into "school." I have no idea what I'm doing now. I don't feel right about starting now since baby could be here TODAY and then we'll just be all confused since we'd have to stop in the middle for who knows how long.<br /><br />My prayer is just that I won't be too hard on myself about "keeping the schedule" with my new baby. Because there are more important things than making sure you check off a box when you have a newborn. (and lack of sleep!)<br /><br />And, although we have been "off school" lately, we are still sticking with the basics. Superkid finished his math workbook, so we're ready to start fresh with Singapore math. And, we've continued with First Language Lessons - almost done with that, so we'll be able to start fresh with Primary Language Lessons. We're working, just not on EVERYTHING right now.<br /><br />Anyway, I'm just thinking outloud. Hoping to remind myself that IT'S OK that I'm not "on target" with my plans. God has worked everything according to His plan, and that's what's most important. :-)<br /><br />Check back after baby comes.Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-66764090645873858712008-02-12T15:26:00.000-08:002008-02-12T16:40:49.215-08:00No baby, but we've got curriculum!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1CgfC5AcBSAMocq557psybDZCL2rbdZYV9ZGowDpXcKYO0xV9j0jl2w7XUc9MCe7AcI8Icqud5-QkBdBQAi9MZiuP7hDk-4XdXUG4DzwUdi_lcuewGigRTl8WK5Zg8S-wl48dptJ1rcs/s1600-h/100_3746.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5166239467515363394" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" height="313" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1CgfC5AcBSAMocq557psybDZCL2rbdZYV9ZGowDpXcKYO0xV9j0jl2w7XUc9MCe7AcI8Icqud5-QkBdBQAi9MZiuP7hDk-4XdXUG4DzwUdi_lcuewGigRTl8WK5Zg8S-wl48dptJ1rcs/s400/100_3746.JPG" width="430" border="0" /></a><br /><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div>Took me awhile to post this since I keep packing my camera just in case baby comes. And, I'm telling you this has been the longest wait in my life! I was expecting WEEKS ago that he'd be here and yet here we are. </div><div></div><div>Anyway...</div><div></div><div>In the meantime to keep my mind busy I have been busy planning and with some extra finances I've been able to do some ordering too! How exciting to start out with lots of new things that will bless our school. </div><div></div><div></div><div>I have so much to say and I'm having a hard time figuring out where to begin. </div><div></div><div></div><div>First of all, I am SOO super excited for this year!! It looks like we are going to have a great time. Looks like lots of science experiments, but I think we can handle them. I've spent time looking over them and I think the will be doable. I LOVE the way the bible corresponds to the science study each week. I was able to spend awhile looking at our library system online and mark whether our library has each book or if I need to make requests. That will cut down on my weekly preparation. I also plan to do all of my copying at once so that will make each week a lot less stressful. Comparing the prep for ECC, I think I might struggle with the week to week plan vs. two-three weeks at a time. We'll see how all that works out. </div><div></div><div><em><strong></strong></em></div><div><em><strong>"I Can Do All Things - Art"</strong></em> seemed very complicated at first, but I think I've got a handle on it now. I spent some time looking through it and it seems to make sense now. I was disappointed that it is more of a consumable workbook than I had thought. I was under the impression I could save this for my upcoming children. It's pretty pricey whether you choose to copy the whole thing (which you have permission to do) or buy a whole separate one. This would be a problem for larger families I would think. But, then again this is an optional program so it just might be something to opt out of. My son is very excited to have an art class this year.</div><div></div><div></div><div>Another thing I found kind of complicated when I first looked at it was the <em><strong>Singapore Math.</strong></em> Now that I have looked the entire thing over (and read MFW's booklet) I think we can handle it. In some ways it appears very simple and maybe too childish. But, then taking another look (and emphasizing those "Key Terms" MFW recommends) I can see how it all works together and is actually very challenging! I did buy under Superkid's ability so that we can adjust to the program before moving on to harder work. It is going to be an adjustment, but I think it will work for us.</div><div></div><div></div><div>In the midst of all of this I also went ahead and purchased some other things - all of which will last for years to come. You can see all that I'm talking about in the "What we're learning" spot on the right side of my blog.</div><div></div><div><strong></strong></div><div><strong>Character Study - Ethics: An Early American Handbook.</strong></div><div>This book is going to be such a blessing to our year! I had looked at this last year and I think it's awesome how God worked it into this years study. It is simply a guide with stories written in 1890 for the youth about the importance of character. I think this will give us many good conversations as we read through it.</div><div></div><div><strong></strong></div><div><strong>English- Primary Language Lessons</strong></div><div>This one is difficult to explain why I went ahead and switched to PLL from First Language Lessons. Although they are similar, I found that PLL was much more gentle and yet challenging at the same time. We are just finishing up first grade with First Language Lessons so it comes at a great time. Since PLL starts in 2nd grade. </div><div></div><div><em></em></div><div><em>By the way, it won't take long for us to "catch up" in these subjects. We'll be there before we know it. It's completely my fault I let life happen while some of our core learning slipped away.</em></div><div></div><div><strong></strong></div><div><strong>Sequential Spelling</strong></div><div>I have been looking at this for awhile. I spent a day at a friends house while she homeschooled and watched as she used this. I think this is such a smart way of teaching spelling. And very simple too! My son struggles with his writing and I think there is a tie to his confidence in his spelling. Once he feels stronger in his spelling skills I think he will be less inclined to complain about writing. We'll see...</div><div></div><div><strong></strong></div><div><strong>Cursive Handwriting- Start Write</strong></div><div>The other day it occurred to me that I hadn't really taught cursive. In fact Superkid has a hard time even READING it. I had waited since I didn't feel that he was excelling in his printing. After hearing from a few people that doing cursive actually helps in the handwriting department and thinking about how it makes sense since they are motivated to write. Plus you can't write "wrong" when you are writing in cursive because you don't lift your pencil. Anyway, I decided we'd head into cursive because it's beyond time to learn. Recently I had heard of Start Write and decided that it was a great investment. I'm still waiting for it in the mail, but the idea of it is great! Especially for my reluctant writer because I can give him copy work from anything he wants to write about. I plan to use this for his memory verses, narrations, etc. Overall I can see how helpful this will be.</div><div></div><div><em><strong></strong></em></div><div><em><strong>Nature Study Books</strong></em></div><div><strong></strong></div><div><strong></strong></div><div><strong>Handbook of Nature Study</strong></div><div>I already did a review of this one on my other blog. I think this is such a must for homeschooling!</div><div></div><div><strong></strong></div><div><strong>Keeping a Nature Journal</strong></div><div>This looks like a great book. It explains some common sense ideas on how to keep up and make a nature journal. So far we haven't been doing so good on this, but eventually we'll be better. This book is broken down by the seasons which I love, because it keeps you motivated throughout the year to spend time in God's world.</div><div><strong></strong></div><div><strong>The Laws Field Guide to the Sierra Nevada's</strong></div><div>Simply a great guide for the area we live.</div><div></div><div><em>Oh kay...</em></div><div>I think I've written a novel here. Hopefully it helped someone as they make their curriculum decisions. I know I didn't make sense in some areas. Maybe when my brain isn't mushy I can review this to fix my grammar and add the links, etc. For right now, I just want to get this up before I get distracted again. :-)<br /></div>Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-53346380750159404342008-02-05T16:57:00.001-08:002008-02-05T17:09:26.883-08:00Purchases & PlanningWent ahead and bought the same "Filing Notebook" (comes with a notebook inside - where I put the manual) by Mead again. <em>You can see it </em><a href="http://ourhomeschoolingfun.blogspot.com/2007/10/getting-organized.html"><em>here</em></a><em> if you'd like.</em> It worked so well with ECC, that I was really hoping I could find the same thing again. I bought red for our adventures year. I got the clear, thin flexible notebook too, so I can continue with the same system. I was tempted to buy for the next few years, but my budget just didn't seem to think that was the best plan.<br /><br />Spent some time going over the materials & recipes lists in the files on the yahoo group. So, I'm almost all set!<br /><br />If you haven't noticed, I'm keeping my mind busy because I am SUPER anxious to meet my baby boy!!!! Any day... any <em>minute</em> now - he could come!<br /><br />By the way, according to the tracking from MFW our curriculum should arrive on Friday. Hope we're here to pick it up. Otherwise, I hope I remember to have someone check for me. We'll see how that works out.<br /><br />Ok, I'm gone now (for really!) until I get the package in the mail or sometime after that depending on how things go.Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-28337398936988164912008-02-05T13:23:00.000-08:002008-02-05T13:30:04.176-08:00Long Term Planning - SCHOOLIn some ways I know that this is almost pointless. Who knows where we will be or what will happen in the upcoming years. But, as I now have both ADV & ECC, I am looking to plan for the next few years. I find it motivating to have a goal in mind, but have to remind myself that the schedule cannot be my final authority because right in the middle of all of my perfect plans - <em>Life always happens!</em><br /><br />Here's my long term plan as it stands right now:<br /><br /><br /><strong>Sept. 07- Jan. 08: ECC<br /></strong>Superkid-2nd grade<br />Pickles- 2yrs<br /><br /><strong>March 08 - Jan. 09: ADV</strong><br />Superkid-2nd/3rd grade<br />Pickles-3yrs<br />Baby Boy-Baby<br /><br /><strong>Feb. 09 - Sept. 09: ECC<br /></strong>Superkid- 3rd grade<br />Pickles-3/4 yrs.<br />Baby Boy- 1 year<br /><br /><strong>Oct. 09-July.10: CTG<br /></strong>Superkid-4th grade<br />Pickles-4/5 years<br />Baby Boy-2yrs<br /><br /><strong>Sept.10-June11: RTR<br /></strong>Superkid-5th grade<br />Pickles-5/6<br />Baby Boy-3yrs<br /><br /><strong>Sept.11 - June 12: Ex-1850<br /></strong>Superkid-6th grade<br />Pickles- 6/7<br />Baby Boy-4yrs<br /><br /><strong>Sept.12 - Jun. 13: 1850-Mod</strong>.<br />Superkid-7th grade<br />Pickles-7/8 yrs<br />Baby Boy-5yrs<br /><br /><em>Then...</em><br /><strong>ECC again?</strong><br />Superkid-8th<br />Pickles-8yrs<br />Baby Boy-5Mercyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00426081295307182182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906775188885226546.post-32537566571702876152008-02-04T11:40:00.000-08:002008-02-04T11:45:50.662-08:00They contacted me.And everything is taken care of.
